A strong union needs skills, benefits and ACTION!
One of NASRCCs own is becoming a published author, with a book launch set for this weekend. Organizing for Power is a book about creative union organizing happening in the greater Boston area. Developed the Boston Labor Conference and edited by Aviva Chomsky and Steve Striffler, the book contains chapters by leading scholars and labor leaders from across New England.
Local 327 member and Council Representative Liz Skidmore co-authored a chapter with Dr. Susan Moir on work done by the Policy Group on Tradeswomen’s Issues (PGTI) to increase the number of women in the construction trades.
Skidmore has been a carpenter, business agent and leader of efforts to strengthen “Sisters in the Brotherhood” and other initiatives to increase and maintain the number of women in the union. The chapter touches on her work with PGTI and other groups, particularly in relation to construction of the Integrated Science Center at UMass, Boston and the two casino projects, in Springfield and Everett.
Organizing for Power: Building A twenty-First-Century Labor Movement in Boston is published by Haymarket Books and is available for order online here
