A strong union needs skills, benefits and ACTION!
Marissa Settino, an apprentice with Local 279 and an Army veteran, credits much of her professional development to her military experience. She describes her time in the service as instrumental in shaping her leadership abilities, teamwork skills, and resilience—qualities she sees as essential for success in the union trades.
After transitioning from the military, Marissa completed the Sisters in Brotherhood (SIB) Pre-Apprenticeship Program, which she describes as both “informative and empowering”. Now a third-year apprentice, she has not only built a solid foundation of technical skills but also developed a strong, supportive network within the union.
“It [the pre-apprenticeship program] provided me with crucial insights into the construction industry and helped build a strong network of supportive women in trades. This program not only enhanced my technical skills but also fostered a sense of camaraderie that has been instrumental in my journey as a union carpenter,” said Settino.
As we continue to honor our veteran members this month, and our apprentices during National Apprenticeship Week, Marissa’s story stands as a testament to the value of training, mentorship and the strength of veterans as they transition into new careers, especially in the union trades.
