A strong union needs skills, benefits and ACTION!
Daniel Oill is a member of Local 290. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a major in Entrepreneurial Management, he started working in residential carpentry and realized his love for the craft.
“Even though I love building things, the reality of it too was that I was close to turning 25 and loosing my health insurance coverage under my parents so I knew I had to act fast and do something,” Daniel said. “I saw an ad in the paper about the apprenticeship program and although I knew I loved to build; the main attraction was the benefits.”
Now, a 3rd year apprentice, Daniel says while the benefits are great, his appreciation for the brotherhood and the opportunities available is even greater. “The brotherhood you get here is awesome and we all look out for one another, we’re one big network of friends. The amount of training that we receive for free is incredible and it shows how much the union is willing to invest in you to be the best you can be.”
Daniel recently attended the 3rd Year Apprentice Program at the UBC International Training Center in Las Vegas with fellow NASRCC Brothers and Sisters and learnt how professionalism, productivity, skill, and attitude contribute to his individual success as well as that of his employer, Green Build.
“It was an eye-opener on multiple levels. Seeing where you can go in the union, and the opportunities that are available to you was amazing. It made me realize that there is no limit, and nothing is out of reach here,” Daniel said.
“The Carpenters union gives us the tools and we got to use our motivation and determination to go out there and be the best and climb that ladder. It’s up to you to give it your all everyday!”
