Opponents of a 2022 Massachusetts ballot question submitted by Uber and big tech corporations demonstrated and announced a growing list of allies at a demonstration on Beacon Hill today. Staff and members of the Carpenters union were there to show their opposition as well in advance of a hearing today in the Joint Committee on Financial Services.

The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters has named Noel Xavier as the Organizing Director for its seven-state area. He fills the position recently vacated by Brian Richardson, who retired this summer. Richardson and Xavier worked together closely for several years as part of the council’s succession plan.
Within the Organizing Department, the council has also named John O’Connor as Director of Residential Business Development. He will work with Xavier, regional managers and staff, primarily in Eastern New England.

Companies like Uber, Lyft and DoorDash have been fighting with federal and state agencies and lawmakers for years to get their employees re-classified so they don’t have to pay state and local taxes and avoid the most common worker protections. Unable to make a persuasive case with public officials, they’ve decided to use their mega-billions to bulldoze workers and their advocates by trying to pass a state ballot question here in Massachusetts.

Last week, the United States Senate passed a bi-partisan infrastructure bill that would create millions of jobs for Americans and thousands of jobs for union carpenters. UBC General President McCarron has called it the “largest investment in our nation’s infrastructure in a century and said it “isn’t just an investment in our roads and bridges. This is an investment in the American union workers who build them.”
