As a former union carpenter who started his own construction company, Mike Kane who operates Kane Contracting in New York has seen the issue from both perspectives. He states misclassification is a growing problem in the industry and the “long-term consequences are dire”. He calls for a concerted effort from policymakers and district attorneys to enforce existing labor laws for this “crime”, promote fair competition and protect the interests of honest contractors.
