A strong union needs skills, benefits and ACTION!
This week, members of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC) will rally at locations across the seven-state region to call out rampant tax fraud in the construction industry—a practice that robs workers, taxpayers, and law-abiding businesses alike. The union also recently sent letters to District Attorneys, urging them to prioritize enforcement of existing laws and crack down on tax fraud and worker misclassification.
“This isn’t just a labor issue—it’s a public crisis,” said Bill Banfield, Assistant Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters. “When contractors commit tax fraud by misclassifying workers or paying them under the table, it’s the public who pays the price—through underfunded schools, crumbling infrastructure, and unfair competition for honest contractors. New York has made real strides in passing strong laws, but enforcement must catch up. We need accountability to protect working families, responsible businesses, and taxpayers.”
New York now ranks fourth in the nation for construction tax fraud, behind only Texas, California, and Florida. The NASRCC—representing 30,000 skilled professionals across New England and New York—is committed to raising public awareness and advocating for stronger enforcement to put an end to these illegal and unsafe practices.
The actions are part of Tax Fraud Days of Action, a national campaign led by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters from April 12–18 to spotlight the exploitation of workers and the erosion of public resources due to illegal business practices. Across the U.S., an estimated $75 billion is lost annually to construction industry tax fraud.
