MA Girls in Trades Conference Inspires Over 500 Students to Explore Careers in the Trades

Full house today at the IBEW in Dorchester, MA, for MA Girls in Trades Eastern Conference and Career Fair. Over 500 students from 26 high schools attended workshops and a career fair to learn about the importance of apprenticeship programs and the value in choosing a rewarding, life-long career in the trades. With over 45 booths from union trades, contractors and state entities, students gained vital knowledge about the variety of career opportunities available to young women in the construction trades.

NASRCC members Teresa Murphy, Local 2168; Sam Smith, Local 327; and Bre Rankins, Local 327 spoke directly with students passing through the career fair. Local 339 member Angie Velez participated in a student workshop panel discussion sharing her experience as a union carpenter.

Massachusetts Girls in Trades was launched in 2015 by a partnership of educational, governmental, and union organizations with a shared goal of supporting and encouraging female career and technical education students and alumnae to pursue careers in the building trades. Special thanks to everyone – especially our members – for participating in the event!
